Dragon's Egg is my new favorite book, and one of it's most prominent characters is the immeasurably bright Seargent (and later Scholar,) Swiftkill, so named because as a child she killed the powerful and terrifying "Swift" armed only with a short eating knife.

She is, of course, a Cheela.

Pictured here with her "Dragon Lance" made from the crystalic inner supports of the Dragon Plant, Swiftkill patrols her clan's portion of Egg, eyes at the ready.

You guys, you have to read this book.

Dude, your cheela actually look like single cell organisms, like they should. SwiftKiller always was my favorite character from the first book. :D
